The Beach Bum” is kind of like when you go to a restaurant and see a list of ingredients for a dish that then tastes exactly like you expect it to. If you’re thinking “Matthew McConaughey as a carefree pothead poet who wanders the Florida coast from the director of ‘Spring Breakers,’ I know what this is,” well, you're not wrong. And yet the shaggy dog nature of this film, one that mimics its protagonist’s neverending belief that everything is just gonna be alright, alright becomes almost transcendent.
Can't really recommend it. Pretty stupid movie about a pretty stupid guy doing a whole bunch of pretty stupid stuff non-stop continuously, in the guise of having fun trying to pursue his supposed poetry writing brilliant genius career. Never bought it. Whole movie including Matthews performance had a trying too hard, desperate to be hip, cool, laid back veneer to it. Never rang true. Snoop saying 'mother f'er all the time and Mathew with a newfound sociopath buddy smashing (spoiler) an old retiree on his electric scooter passing by in his head with a beer bottle in order to get a little more spending green to continue having more incredibly stupid mindless fun... just was not fun for me. Sorry. Guess I'm just unhip and inadequate to the sublime pleasures of such entertainments. I like Mathew and respect him as an excellent great actor. Just look no further than 'The Lincoln Lawyer', 'Killer Joe', 'Gold', 'Dallas Buyers Club', 'Interstellar' among many other favorites, and especially 'Mud', as proof positive of the greatness and wide ranging versatility of his acting. But this one disappointed. Did not live up to past heights. I'm guessing it (ignoring the senior citizen head bashing leaving him unconscious in the middle of the night sprawled on the pavement without a second thought, to go have more mindless drunken stupid stoner doper fun) looked good on paper. And I imagine the paycheck was satisfying enough. But man, not the best showcase for your talents dude. Wanted and pretty much expected to like it at least reasonably well going in. But it didn't take long at all to feel that expectation and hope slipping away. Although there were some mildly enjoyable mini bits sprinkled throughout it here and there, I still had a surprisingly strong urge to walk out a couple of times just for the sheer monumentally mindless depths of stupid stupidity of it all. But I stuck it out bro, right up to the weak, limp, nonsensical, unredeeming, unsatisfying, and of course very stupid end. So I guess it's clear I'll not be recommending it today. Not as bad as poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but I'll pass on both the sharp stick and really wouldn't have missed much of anything had I missed this one. Better luck on the next one Matt and I will go see you in that one, based your exemplary past accomplishments and my faith in you bro. But please bro, just please do try to sidestep, avoid, go nowhere near, another rank steaming turkey pile like this one in the future, ok man?
The Beach Bum shows us the joys of life despite the pain of loss, death and poverty. It's a celebration of life embodied in a remarkable performance by Matthew McConaughey. Moondog is an exultant poet, more enamored with life than poetry, who lives an excessively pleasurable life with a poetic bent. Give yourself over to the film and you will have a good time, and in the end that's what it's really about.
Great movie !! It was an intriguing watch throughout the whole movie.Talented people made this movie happen. To me, it shined a profound light upon the imprisoned lifestyle of the “American dream”, the ugliness of individuality. Through a care free, everything goes; Moon dog, he made me understand that your inner brilliance shines best when you seek fun, happiness, and fellowship in others. This movie made me realize that we as people can easily lose our vitality in our short lives, in seeking to obtain acceptance and normalcy in the eyes of society.
I'm certain this is just a narcissist's wet dream. Reckless film making with no story, no emotion, no actually character development. The whole film I was just waiting for or maybe hoping for "Moon doggie's death. The message this movie sends to it's target audience, white men in their teens and early twenties and/or and elderly Florida Man who sees this film as a way to live out the fantasy that he is too poor or not charismatic enough to ever actually execute, is don't worry do whatever you want, stand idly by while everyone around you is physically and emotionally harmed, but worry not you will experience no personal consequences. Stop calling this a stoner comedy, this is a white male privileged porn waiting to be queued up while you get high with your bros before your next circle jerk.

If you go see this film expecting to be entertained as if this were a "Dazed and Confused"/"Fast Times" type stoner comedy, you will be disappointed. This is, in fact, a "think-piece" art film masquerading as the former. I hardly ever go to the movies anymore because there is rarely ever anything good playing. I'm actually going to see see this a second time...as soon as I get back from my #MoondogMigration to Key West.
It's a story of washed-up poet named Moondog (Matthew McConaughey) living in Florida. Moondog just does one another crazy things one after and there are never any consequences to his rash behavior. Also I enjoyed this movie for a couple of the reasons. Moondog himself is a fun character to watch. Also acting of Mathew is quite satisfying and I respect him as an excellent actor. Only those people who love Mathew should watch this movie, otherwise its totally boring and some time irritating movie.
